Emma Sheppard

Associate

I facilitate sessions for leadership teams on the Being Luminary programme, focusing mostly on sex, pregnancy and maternity, and on religion and belief. I also contribute to sessions on the Middle Leaders programme.

Over the last eight years I have become an expert in a niche area: the impact of the motherhood penalty on the teaching workforce. Working with Being Luminary lets me place that expertise in the full context of DEI work, and draw out what is common across different protected characteristics. What comes up again and again is choice and imposed limitation, the universality of human experience, and the practical things that build a sense of belonging in the communities we serve.

After a career in and around London, Vietnam and a short stint in Singapore, I am now based in the south of France with my family. The food culture here works with nature, so my recommendation is to eat, in abundance, whatever fruit and vegetables are in season.
